This is the walk we take when I don't want to go to the hills and get dusty or don't feel like taking on the hills, want to keep Hamp clean that day, or maybe it's just getting too dark and Lake Merritt is the best place to get in three miles and not worry about the sun going down.
This was that kind of day, the sun beginning to go down, and we were walking from the west, past the old Oakland Auditorium, toward the south corner. As we turned from the south corner and headed east, with 1200 Lakeshore on our right, I looked across the lake, toward Harrison and Grand where the new Archdiocese of Oakland is under construction.
Something about the time of day and the angle of my view and the light illuminating the middle candle wick-like structure in view through the entryway, one of my favorite body parts lit by the sun and on display half mile away.
The boy in the boat larger than life and unmistakable. I wonder if they had any idea during the design phase what they were giving life to for those of us circling the lake and having a clear direct view straight in to the cathedral.

Is this what I'm suppose to be doing?

Another blog...talking to a friend today about anonymity and thinking about what to write and what of that needs to be hidden. Too bad we can't express frustration, no matter how momentary or even immature it may be, without fear. I don't keep up with the details of other people's experience, but have gotten wind of setbacks caused by writing freely.
It could be that the lesson for the writer was necessary, and the lesson going back to the Golden Rule. I am not afraid of writing something directly trashing someone (ok, I may cross that line in the heat of the moment when it comes to politicians), but am more concerned with crossing the line of conformity. No, not true at all...I'm just afraid of getting caught...and this begins to feel like a whirlpool of justification because it's not like I am doing anything wrong. My interest is in finding whatever it is that really matters to me. Why is this a big deal at all? Well, as soon as there's some kind of label attached a sort of life cycle begins. Maybe it starts out in great favor. Wow! How long do you think that will last?
So, much of the issue here is determining and holding onto that which I love and which makes me happy without concern of what anyone thinks. All of this is from possibly job searching, and not wanting to end up someplace where a large percentage of the office humor is at the expense of someone who works there, behind their back and in a cutting way.
Finding new work...finally admitting that what I've been involved with is just not for me. One of the strangest things about this is how little I care. In this field there are so many different kind of people who use this service, and some people are absolutely wonderful-that's usually the clients. Maybe what I haven't been able to get use to is how this is one of the strangest examples of self employment-it's too close to being employed, to having someone else in the picture, for me to be content and motivated.
Big point, motivation. I've known through most of my adult life I am not so money motivated. I am motivated by honesty, supportive people who are kind and have integrity, and allow a sense of connectedness in the workplace-that's the kind of people I work best around. And when I've been comfortable this way, that's when I've made the most money.
So, at this point, I am making lists of things to do completely independent. Too much bias comes into play in offices and it's not often worked out in a win-win way. The sense of alienation that comes from working in an office is not good, and I would like to remove myself from places like that for good.
Excuse the cynicism and negativity. That's why I'm writing this, so I can see what I need to do, what I need to change. My attitude, and looking forward instead of backwards.
Can you imagine, and hold always in your mind, a happy life?
That's my true goal.
